12th Day Postpartum

I've had some recent little victories that mothers of multiple children will probably laugh at, but I think they're worth sharing. I've managed to get myself and both boys to my friend Chrissy's house, a La Leche League meeting, and a playgroup at my friend Adrianne's house. And I even arrived on time! I have figured out how to get Leo and Jules out of the car at the same time (with my coffee or tea in hand also) and how to manage short shopping trips (I put Leo in the cart and Jules in my ring sling). I have found that with two children this young my ring sling REALLY comes in handy. I'm using it so much more this time around. When Leo was a baby, I could put him in a bouncy seat or a swing...but if I were to do that with Jules, Leo would probably find him (they're too young to leave alone together), so I need to either hold Jules or wear him close to me. The sling allows me to keep Jules close to me and also have 2 free hands. When Leo is napping, I usually put Jules in the swing. Then I usually have a few hours where both boys are sleeping and I can get things done - respond to emails, update the blog, do some laundry (which we have plenty of!) This morning Ben and Leo did some manly work around the house - fixed our fence and little odds and ends around the house. Jules and I went shopping and got a great deal on some shorts for his big brother at the local children's consignment shop. When I came home, Leo was napping and Ben and I were able to have a peaceful lunch together. Now Jules is asleep in the swing and Leo will be waking up soon. It's 80 degrees here today, and we'll be heading to the playground once Leo wakes up.

You are doing such a good job Rebecca. I can't believe you are getting around so well. Good for you!!! It takes some getting used to but I see you are totally up for the challenge!!!

Congrats! You're figuring out good tricks. But I sure did think of you today at a session by an old fashioned "black granny midwife" at the ICAN conference. She was telling us about all the rituals cultures used to have and as are still seen in Africa, how new mothers are reverenced and kept separate/apart/special for three to six MONTHS. She discussed how important this is to protect women. In this culture, women feel the need to leap up and get moving, but then other people think, "Well, if she can run to the grocery store, why isn't she cooking all the meals and cleaning too?" It actually made me all teary. So, I do hope you are still resting a LOT and putting up your feet.

You are just a good mother. And that's it.

Ben is lucky to have your as the mother of his children. And a reminder never hurt anyone.

I agree with Katherine. It's so easy to overdo. Just pamper yourself as much as possible. Your sons are so lucky to have you for their mother.
