Jules Meets His Godparents

Ben and I asked our good friends Michael and Adrianne to be baby Jules' godparents. They gladly accepted the responsibility. Below are pictures of Michael and Adrianne holding Jules for the first time.

Adrianne has brought us over dinner twice now and has organized having friends bring us dinners every night for a few weeks. What a thoughtful friend! Our fridge has never been better stocked, and I don't think Ben has eaten this well in a long time (yes, I must admit, the meals made for us by other women have totally humbled me and made my cooking look pitiful in comparison!)

Don't be humbled! Women always cook fancier for postpartum friends than for their own families. When I make meals for new moms, either (1) my husband gets a much more lame meal (like takeout pizza) because I spent all my energy cooking for someone else or (2) he gets a nicer meal than usual because I simply double the recipe and keep half for our family. Ha ha!

Oh, and one of my favorite stories about how you just don't know: My friend Sarah had her fourth baby (in five years) one week before I had my first baby. A few days after I had John, Sarah came over with a meal. She made me homemade lentil soup, a gorgeous salad, homemade bread, and her own recipe of amazing, super healthful yet delicious chocolate chip cookies. She drove an hour across town to my house. She brought all four of her children. Her kindness sent me spinning into a depression. How could she do all that only a week-and-a-half postpartum with her fourth?! And I was still having Chris feed me meals with a fork because I had to use both hands to hold John all the time! Well, TWO YEARS LATER I was chatting with my friend Sarah and it came out quite casually that her gift to me totally spent her for a week! She used up all her energy on me and that was that, she was back to being a regular postpartum lady recovering on the couch. And for two years I've been beating myself up in comparison. Sheesh.
