Those of you who follow this blog know that the previous owners of our home had, umm...well, shall we say "different" taste than us...
"Exhibit A"
Disclaimer: No, I don't know what they were thinking either...

Our house has two 2-bedroom apartments under it, this being one bedroom of one of the apartments which I'm turning into a guest suite. This room will feature a double bed, and there's a room next to it that we'll use as a playroom...we'll also put some bunk beds in there so friends with children can have a nice place to stay when they visit...there's also a kitchenette down there, which I've been refinishing (pictures to come later)...
Anyway, I have been doing this with Joni strapped to my back, and even though I had been working on it a little bit each day, I was getting a bit overwhelmed.
My stepfather, Jimmo, was kind enough to step in and help paint...didn't he do a nice job? Do you like the color? I am going for a "shabby chic" look for the guest suite...the color is a light purple which I think gives it a nice romantic, Victorian look...all these items we already had, some of them I repainted to make them work with the room (see pictures below), and I bought a chandelier for $90 that I'm trying to convince my husband to allow me to hang in there...I can send you his eMail address if you'd like ;-) He wants me to return it back to the store...but really, what's a "shabby chic" room without a chandelier? I think for the cost of paint and the cost of a chandelier this counts as designing on a dime!

You can't really tell from the picture, but I actually made the headboard out of a cute sheet I got at the thrift store for $1. It has lovely "shabby chic" roses on it. The black wrought iron headboard just wasn't doing it for me with the shabby chic theme I was trying to achieve...I suppose I could paint it a brass color or a white, but it seems like it would be a lot of extra work to take apart the bed, drag it upstairs, paint it, put it back together....so for now, my makeshift fabric enhanced headboard will have to do!
The hanging hooks on the wall are white wrought iron...I "distressed" them myself using a screwdriver...the valance I got at a thrift store for 25 cents...it's a tad bit small, but it fits the playroom perfectly, so I'm thinking of moving it there and hunting for an inexpensive one to fit this space...it's just that this pattern works so well with my shabby chic decor. One of the attendees at our wedding was a florist, and her wedding gift to us was to preserve my wedding bouquet in a shadow box style frame. It has been sitting in the garage because it just didn't fit with my upstairs decor...I just couldn't find a place for it...
until...
it occurred to me how perfectly it would fit in with my shabby chic theme! So I whitewashed the oak wooden frame with white wood stain, and I painted this brown wicker nightstand that had been in our family for a while and was pretty sad looking...it was brown before, and now it's white...not bad, right?

Really, really fabulous. What a cool way to fix that headboard.
Does Ben realize that very few women know how to do what you're doing with all this decorating on a dime?
