A Pocket Guide to the Bible

How many of you have actually read the Bible in its entirety? Don't worry, I'm not taking a poll. Most Christians haven't. Even if you've only read parts of the Bible, you probably know that it's composed of many different books, some of which are easier to read than others. For example, the book of Numbers has two complete censuses of the people of Israel taken forty years apart. Not exactly the easiest reading! And then there are the gospels which are riveting, the Song of Songs and the Psalms which read like poetry...where do we begin? Should we start from the beginning and read the Bible cover to cover? Should we just open it up randomly and start reading where our finger lands? While there certainly isn't one right answer to this question, in A Pocket Guide to the Bible, Dr. Scott Hahn, one of the most respected Scripture scholars of our day, offers practical suggestions to those of us who are so intimidated by the Bible we don't even know where to begin. If this describes you, A Pocket Guide to the Bible is the answer to your prayers. A Pocket Guide to the Bible is also a must have for catechumens (people coming into the Catholic Church). If it were up to me, I'd give it out as a present to all RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) graduates. I can't think of a better stocking stuffer. But since it's only July, why not just order one from The Catholic Company today? And while you're there, why not help The Catholic Company  send 5,000 Catechisms to those in need?

Once I made good progress trying to read the Bible straight through. I probably made it halfway (which is part way through the OT). At least in Protestant materials, there are guides available that put the books of the Bible in chronological order, which makes reading them actually thrilling and interesting, like a good history.
