It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

This morning I woke up to the boys bursting into my room telling me there was a "big bird" in the front yard. I grabbed the baby, and opened the front door, only to be greeted by a VERY LARGE bird staring me in the face in my front yard!  I ran to get my camera, but made the mistake of putting Joni down, which caused her to scream, and caused the mysterious bird to fly away. Luckily, there were many of them (I counted FIVE!) and I was able to snap a few shots (though they weren't as good as the first one would have been had Joni not scared the bird away!)

At first I thought they were turkeys. But then they flew into the tree outside my front window. And turkeys don't fly, right?  Then I thought they were vultures. And then I googled it, and figured out that there are actually birds called "turkey vultures" and that these seem to fit the description!

Look slightly to the left of the tree...can you see it flying? Click on the pic to enlarge!

Look at the tree branch on the right...can you see the bird perched there?  Look closely!  And click the pic to enlarge!

What lovely scenery we have been blessed with. My morning coffee was lovely. We are so blessed!

Is the vulture standing in front of something dead? Ick!

Turkeys can fly by the way! They fly way up into the tops of the trees when we scare them out of our yard!

Chrissy, it was actually in front of a log, but you're right, it DID look like it was in front of something that had died! Gross! So I took down the pic! Anyway, now I'm thinking maybe they were turkeys? I didn't know turkeys could fly way up in the tree tops!

We have a flock of turkey vultures that live in our neighborhood. One day I was walking with the kids and the whole flock (nearly 10?) was perched in my neighbor's tree. It was creepy!
